SEO just changed again. Google AI Overviews now have their own visibility reports inside Search Console, giving website owners their first real look at how often their pages show up inside these AI-generated answers and AI Mode — the AI-generated answers that now sit above traditional search results for a huge share of queries.
If you have not checked this yet, here is what changed, why it matters, and what to do about it.
What Changed With Google AI Overviews Reporting
Google began testing dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026, then rolled them out globally at the end of August. For the first time, site owners can see impressions specifically from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover, broken down by page, country, device, and date.
Before this, AI-driven visibility was invisible. Your regular Search Console numbers could look flat or steady while an AI Overview was quietly answering questions about your business without ever sending you a click.
Why This Matters More Than It Sounds
The stakes here are bigger than most people realize. When an AI Overview appears on a search result, it can reduce organic click-through rates by as much as 61 percent — because the searcher gets their answer without ever visiting a website. But brands that do get cited inside those AI answers can see up to 35 percent more organic clicks than brands that do not.
In other words, showing up inside the AI answer is no longer a nice-to-have. It is becoming the difference between getting traffic and getting skipped entirely.
What the New Reports Can (and Cannot) Tell You
The new Search Console reports show you impressions — how often your pages appeared inside AI features. What they do not show you is clicks, click-through rate, or which specific queries triggered the appearance. That is an important gap to understand before you draw conclusions from the data.
To get the fuller picture, most marketers are now combining a few data sources:
- Search Console’s new AI reports for raw impression data by page and country
- Google Analytics 4 for referral and session data to see if AI-driven visibility is translating into visits
- Citation tracking tools that check whether your brand is actually named inside AI answers, not just present in the source data
What Small Businesses Should Do Right Now
- Check your Search Console account for the new AI performance report — it should now be visible globally as of the end of August 2026
- Look at which pages are showing impressions in AI features, and compare that to which pages you would expect to be cited for your key topics
- Write content that answers questions directly — clear, well-structured answers near the top of a page are more likely to get pulled into an AI-generated summary
- Do not panic over click-through drops alone — check whether you are being cited before assuming you are losing visibility altogether
The Bottom Line
AI Overviews are not going away, and for the first time, Google is giving site owners a direct way to measure how they are performing inside them. The businesses that check this data and adjust their content strategy now will have a real head start over the ones still measuring success by rankings and clicks alone.
